Toovar dal ni khichdi is a class apart from normal khichdis because of the aromatic spices used. I love eating tuvar dal khichdi with papad, pickle and curd.
To make a complete and grand meal you can serve the arhar dal khichdi with Rasawala Bateta Nu Shaak, any form of Kadhi and Rotla.
The toor dal khichdi is wholesome and takes hardly any time to cook. All you would require is a glass of cold chaas to gulp it down.

- Wash and soak the rice and dal together in enough water for at least 30 minutes. Drain and keep aside.
- Heat the ghee in a pressure cooker, add the cumin seeds, cloves, peppercorns and cinnamon.
- When the seeds crackle, add 3½ cups of hot water, rice, toovar dal, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.
- Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
- Serve toovar dal ni khichdi hot with rotla, rasawala bateta nu shaak and kadhi.

For the Toovar Dal Ni Khichdi , first pick and wash the rice and toor dal together in a deep bowl. This is done so as to get rid of excess dirt.
Add enough water to soak the rice and toovar dal. We have used regular surti kolam rice, if you want, you can also use Basmati rice variety.
Cover it with a lid and soak for at least 30 minutes. Soaking will help in cooking the Toovar Dal Ni Khichdi fast.
Drain it using a strainer and keep aside.
Heat the ghee in a pressure cooker. Once the ghee is hot, add the cumin seeds and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds. You can do the tempering in oil too instead of ghee.
Now add the whole spices viz. cloves, peppercorns and cinnamon and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds. They provide a nice aroma and unique flavor to Toovar Dal Ni Khichdi.
Add 3½ cups of hot water. Hot water fastens the cooking process. This khichdi won’t have a mushy consistency. If you want the consistency slightly soft, add more water.
Add the drained rice and toovar dal. To make it more nutritious, you can add finely chopped vegetables like onion, carrot, beans, potato or whole peas.
Add the turmeric powder and salt.
Mix well so the masalas are spread evenly.
Pressure cook for 4 whistles. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid or else you might burn yourself with the hot steam. Once the pressure cooker depressurizes and cools completely, then only open the lid as the khichdi is still cooking inside and the grains might remain raw if you are impatient & open it before time.
Mix gently. It would look like this. At this stage you can even pour some ghee and give it a nice mix to enhance the flavor of arhar dal khichdi.
Serve the Toovar Dal Ni Khichdi hot along with rotla, rasawala bateta nu shaak and kadhi to make a complete meal.
