Ingredients
Main Ingredients
1 cup toovar (arhar) dal
2 cups chopped spinach (palak)
2 tsp finely chopped ginger (adrak)
1 tsp finely chopped green chillies
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
salt to taste
2 tsp oil

3 whole dry Kashmiri red chilli , broken into pieces
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1 tsp chilli powder
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)

- Clean, wash and soak the toovar dal in enough water in a deep bowl for 2 hours. Drain and keep aside.
- Combine the soaked and drained toovar dal, ginger, green chillies, turmeric powder, salt and 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
- Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
- Transfer the mixture in a deep non-stick pan, add the spinach, mix well and bring to boil. Keep aside.
- For the tempering, heat the oil in a small non-stick pan, add the cumin seeds, bayleaves, cloves, red chillies and asafoetida.
- When the seeds crackle, pour the tempering over the cooked dal.
- Add the chilli powder and coriander, mix well and cook on a slow flame for 2 to 3 minutes, while stirring occasionally.

The dal tasted very nice, I have made palak dal before and always add garlic and tomatoes. But even without adding tomatoes it tasted wonderful. The only issue I faced with was adding 3 cups water, I think is too much. Because all water splashed from my pressure cooker on the stove. Though the dal was thin but please suggest if 2 cups water will be fine or 2/12 cup?

Hi Poonam, We are happy you liked the taste. If you wish you can add 2 or 21/2 cups of water and pressure cook and then later the dal if thick you can add little more water.
