Hare Matar ki Chaat | Green Pea Chaat | North Indian Matar Chaat |

Hare Matar ki Chaat, also known as Green Pea Chaat, is a vibrant and flavour-packed North Indian street-style snack made using simple ingredients and bold spices. The base of this North Indian Matar Chaat is made from boiled green peas, which are lightly sautéed with aromatic seasonings to create a warm, tangy and spicy mixture. This chaat is wholesome, refreshing and perfect for those who love traditional flavours without the heaviness of deep-fried snacks.

The tempering begins with heating a little oil and adding asafoetida (hing), which lends a subtle earthiness to the peas. As the peas sauté, the addition of black salt, dried ginger powder (sonth) and dried mango powder (amchur) brings in a beautiful balance of tanginess and warmth. Fresh elements like chopped coriander and green chillies lift the flavour profile, while classic spices such as chaat masala, chilli powder and a little salt round off the seasoning perfectly.

Once the spiced peas are ready, they are transferred to a bowl and topped with refreshing and creamy elements that elevate the dish. A generous layer of fresh whisked curd (dahi) adds coolness, balancing the heat from the spices. The addition of meethi chutney brings a pleasant sweetness that contrasts beautifully with the tangy and spicy peas, creating a well-rounded flavour combination typical of Indian chaats.

To enhance freshness and texture, toppings like finely chopped tomatoes, coriander, cumin powder, a pinch of chilli powder, and a little salt are sprinkled over the curd and chutney. These layers add juiciness, aroma and depth, making every bite exciting. The careful arrangement of ingredients ensures that the chaat offers a variety of flavours—from spicy and tangy to sweet and cooling.

Finally, a handful of potato salli is sprinkled on top, adding a delightful crunch that completes the dish. This finishing touch not only gives the chaat a contrasting texture but also enhances its street-style authenticity. Hare Matar ki Chaat is best served immediately so the textures remain crisp and vibrant, making it an irresistible option for snacks, tea-time gatherings or even light meals.
