We have heard repeatedly that flaxseeds are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, and are an essential food especially for vegetarians. But, many of us are at a loss of interesting ways to include it in our diet.


While we do attempt to include it in mukhwas , raita , etc., here we present a very innovative way to consume this fibre, calcium and Omega-3 fatty acid rich seed in the form of crunchy shakarparas, which can be enjoyed as an evening snack .

Method
    Method
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a deep bowl and knead into a stiff dough using water as required (approx. ¼ cup). Cover with a lid and keep aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions.
  3. Roll out a portion into a 225 mm. (9”) diameter circle without using any flour for rolling. Trim slightly from 4 sides to get a perfect square.
  4. Prick it lightly with a fork and cut it into 25 mm. (1") diamond shaped pieces and.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to make more shakarparas. You will get approx. 45 shakarparas in all.
  6. Arrange all the shakarparas on a baking tray and bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°c (360°f) for 15 to 20 minutes or till they turn light brown and crisp from both the sides, while turning twice in between after every 5 minutes. Keep aside to cool slightly.
  7. Serve or store in an air-tight container.

  1. In a bowl put 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons coarsely powdered flax seeds (alsi).
  2. Add 1 cup whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta).
  3. Add 1 tbsp olive oil.
  4. Add 1 tbsp dried mixed herbs.
  5. Add 1 tsp dry red chilli flakes (paprika).
  6. Add salt to taste. We added 1/2 tsp salt.
  7. Add 1/4 cup water to make a dough. We later added 3 more tablespoons of water.
  8.  Knead into a stiff dough.
  9. Cover with a lid and keep aside for 15 minutes.

  2. Flatten dough and dust with a little flour.
  3. Roll out a portion into a 225 mm. (9”) diameter circle without using any flour for rolling.
  4. Cut vertical lines across the dough with a knife.
  5. Then cut again sideways to make a diamond shaped crackers. You can cut the crackers any way you wish.
  6. Prick it lightly with a fork.

  2. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°c (360°f) for 15 to 20 minutes or till they turn light brown and crisp from both the sides.
  3. At 5 minutes remove tray from oven. 
  4. Flip over the crackers with tongs.
  5. Put the tray back into the oven and bake for 5 more minutes. Flip the crackers over again with tongs.
  6. Bake for the last 5 minutes. This is what the crackers look like.
  7. Keep aside to cool slightly.

tips for flax seed crackers

  1. Make sure the dough is stiff while kenading as mentioned in the recipe. 
  2. Roll into thinly so baking is done soon and also it is cooked well. 
  3. This will stay fresh in an air-tight contianer for 7 days. 
  4. Do not forget to prick it using a fork. 
  5. If you feel the shakarpara has not been cooked well, you can always brush it with little oil and re bake it for 5 to 7 minutes.

A blend of Indian and International flavours... great idea.. The baking time is on a higher side but it turned out to be awesome... good for a change from routine boring snacks.
