Sindhi kadhi is a treat in every sindhi household on sundays. This kadhi is made with toovar dal and is a delightful variation of the ever popular sindhi kadhi. This kadhi is traditionally served with white rice and fried potatoes.

1 cup toovar (arhar) dal
1 gm besan (bengal gram flour)
1/4 cup chopped cluster beans (gavarfali)
2 chopped drumsticks (saijan ki phalli / saragavo)
1/4 cup carrot cut lengthwise
2 medium tomatoes pureed
2 small green chillies finely chopped
1 inch grated ginger (adrak)
few curry leaves (kadi patta)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tbspn oil
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1/4 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp tamarind (imli) paste
salt to taste
chopped coriander (dhania) for garnish
  1. Wash and soak the toovar dal for 30 minutes and pressure cook with 2 cups of water and turmeric powder for 3 whistles.
  2. Heat oil in a kadhai and add the cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  3. When the seeds crackle, add besan and saute till it turns golden brown.
  4. Add red chilli powder, green chillies and ginger and saute for few seconds.
  5. Add the boiled and lightly churned toovar dal, tomato puree, vegetables, curry leaves and salt, mix well and bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Partially cover and simmer the kadhi till the vegetables are almost cooked.
  7. Add the tamarind paste and simmer for more few minutes.
  8. Serve hot garnished with coriander leaves.
