For The Vadas
2 cups chana dal (split bengal gram)
12 red chillies
2 onions , sliced
2 green chillies , sliced
4 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
1/2 fresh coconut , grated
2 tbsp chopped mint leaves (phudina)
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
salt to taste
oil for deep-frying

For The Coconut Chutney
1 fresh coconut , grated
1 onion
6 green chillies
4 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
a small of tamarind (imli)
salt to taste

For the vadas

  1. Soak the dal overnight.
  2. Grind the dal with the cumin seeds and green and red chillies.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients.
  4. Shape into wadas and deep fry in oil
  5. Serve with coconut chutney.

For the coconut chutney

  1. Grind all the ingredients, adding a little water while grinding.
