18 Amazing Turmeric Benefits (Haldi)
If you prepare flavourful and colourful curries and dishes and have a word of appreciation from your loved ones today, it’s because of one of the most important ingredient in curries.... a deep yellow to orange coloured powder viz. TURMERIC also called Haldi in Hindi. Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems practiced in India have relied on this pungent spice for centuries not just to avail of its flavourful instinct but also due to its umpteen distinctive healing properties too.
The turmeric powder which is found in every “masala dabba” is obtained by boiling the roots for hours, drying them for weeks and then grinding them in huge grinders to get the powder. Although extremely popular as an important herb of the kitchen, turmeric gained importance as a health herb only in 1970 when researchers found its most active health compound viz. Curcumin. This is the same compound which gives haldi its typical yellow colour and the one that stains your wooden spoons. Here’s the lowdown of some of the most promising nutritional and health benefits of this spice.
