Healthy typhoid recipes, Indian typhoid diet. Typhoid is a type of fever caused by bacteria called Salmonella typhi, which spreads through water and food. Typhoid is associated with symptoms like poor appetite, headache, lethargy, general pain, diarrhoea and gastric discomfort. Diet plays a major role in the proper cure of typhoid. Drugs alone cannot help unless you follow the recommended diet.

The diet should be progressive, moving from liquid diet to a soft diet and eventually a normal diet depending upon the individual’s food tolerance level. You need to avoid fried, junk foods, and follow some general pointers.

Here are 6 important dietary tips for managing typhoid, reworded for clarity and better flow:

6 Key Dietary Tips for Typhoid Recovery

  1. Focus on Calorie-Dense, Low-Fiber Foods: With a reduced appetite, it's crucial to choose foods that offer a lot of energy without being too heavy on your digestive system. Think of options like Moong Dal Dosa, which are easy to digest but packed with calories.
  2. Prioritize Protein for Tissue Repair: Typhoid often increases your body's metabolic rate, leading to tissue breakdown. To counter this, include plenty of protein in your diet. A dish like Wholesome Khichdiis an excellent choice to provide the necessary building blocks for recovery.
  3. Opt for Cooked Over Raw: It's best to stick to freshly cooked meals during typhoid. Avoid raw foods and salads, as they can be harder to digest and may pose a higher risk of infection.
  4. Eat Small, Frequent Meals: Instead of large meals, aim for smaller, more frequent portions throughout the day. This helps your digestive system manage food more easily. Mini Jowar Pancakes are a great example of a light, manageable snack.
  5. Separate Water from Meals: Try to avoid drinking water right before or during your meals. This can make you feel full quickly, leading to you eating less essential food. Drink water between meals instead.
  6. Test Dairy Tolerance Carefully: Your body's ability to handle milk and other dairy products can vary greatly during typhoid. Start with a small amount and only continue if it feels comfortable. If you experience diarrhea, it's generally best to avoid all dairy products.

Foods to Avoid During Typhoid Recovery

  1. High-Fiber Foods: While fiber is usually good, it can be tough on a sensitive digestive system during typhoid. It's best to avoid whole-grain flours (like jowar, ragi, whole wheat flour), bran flakes, and fibrous vegetables such as broccoli, peas, beans. Also, steer clear of whole pulses and fruits with skin, like pears.
  2. Gas-Forming Foods: To minimize discomfort, cut out vegetables known to cause gas. This includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, radish, and turnips. Additionally, avoid whole pulses such as chickpeas, which can also lead to bloating and gas.
  3. Highly-Seasoned and Spicy Foods: These can irritate your digestive tract when you're recovering. Skip spicy chaats, sizzlers, rich curries, gravies, chutneys, pickles, pulaos, and biryanis. Also, limit strong seasonings like oregano, thyme, and chili flakes.
  4. Junk Foods: These offer little nutritional value and are often difficult to digest. Avoid pasta, pizzas, burgers, French fries, and other processed or fried fast foods.
