Although several oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are commercially available today, the quickest home remedy to regain electrolyte balance after a bout of diarrhoea is the Salt and Sugar Drink!
This simple solution has been used since generations and is quite time-tested and safe. The salt helps to maintain electrolyte balance, while the water restores fluid and sugar is a good source of energy.
Together, they work wonders. Stick to the proportions mentioned in this recipe, because more or less of one ingredient can render the drink ineffective.
The water has to be boiled and then cooled to make it completely safe for drinking after diarrhoea. The sugar and salt have to be added after this. You can also have this Salt and Sugar Drink when you have fever or vomiting.
You can also try Homemade Strained Apple Juice or Rice Porridge .
- Boil the water in a saucepan and keep aside to cool for 30 minutes.
- Once cooled, add the salt, sugar and water in a glass and mix well till the sugar dissolves.
- Keep sipping on it through the day.
