Urad dal, generally the basic ingredient for vadas, takes on the form of appe in this delicious recipe!


A batter of soaked urad is perked up with spice powders and grated veggies before being cooked in an appe mould till crisp and golden in colour.


Since this irresistible Urad Dal and Vegetable Appe does not have rice in it, it does not require fermentation and can be made immediately upon grinding. So, you just need to plan in the soaking time.

Ingredients
1/2 cup urad dal (split black lentils)
1/4 cup grated carrot
1/4 cup grated cabbage
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)
1/2 tsp chilli powder
salt to taste
oil for greasing and cooking

sambhar
coconut chutney
Method
    Method
  1. Clean, wash and soak the urad dal in enough water in a deep bowl for 2 hours. Drain well.
  2. Combine the urad dal and approx. ½ cup of water in a mixer and blend till smooth.
  3. Transfer the urad dal mixture into a deep bowl, add all the remaining ingredients and mix well.
  4. Heat an appe mould on a medium flame and grease it using a little oil.
  5. Pour 1 tbsp of the batter into each mould and put little oil on the sides and on it. Cook till the lower surface becomes golden brown and then turn each appe upside down using a fork so as to cook them from the other side using a little oil.
  6. Repeat with the remaining batter to make more appes.
  7. Serve immediately with sambhar and coconut chutney.

I tried this recipe but On shallow frying I found out that the core remains wet. What can I do to ensure that it is cooked from inside

Tarla Dalal    Hi Ekta, Shallow frying will not let the appes cook completely. You have to use the appe mould that you get in the market. Only that will help you get the perfect cooked appes. Do try this recipe and share your review with us. happy Cooking!

Urad Dal and Vegetable Appe..its so easy and quick to make it.. The veggies give a nice crunchy feel in every bite.. Best enjoyed during evening tea time. A must try recipe..
