Think of this as a more flavourful variant of the everyday Sambhar. A sumptuous mixture of cooked toovar dal, drumstick and vegetables like onions and tomatoes is flavoured with a spicy paste of coconut, onions and spices, and tempered with a traditional mix of mustard seeds and red chillies.


A few sprigs of curry leaves add to the mind-blowing aroma and flavour of this South Indian Style Drumstick Dal. Serve this tasty dal with rice , idlis or dosas .

Ingredients
1 cup drumsticks , cut into 50 mm. ( 2") pieces
1 cup toovar (arhar) dal , soaked for 15 minutes , washed and drained
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1/2 cup chopped onions
3/4 cup chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp chopped curry leaves (kadi patta)
salt to taste
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1 whole dry kashmiri red chilli , broken into pieces
5 to 6 curry leaves (kadi patta)

To Be Ground Into A Coarse Mixture (using 1/4 Cup Of Water)
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/2 tbsp chopped garlic (lehsun)
2 tbsp roughly chopped onions
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tbsp roughly chopped curry leaves (kadi patta)
Method
  1. Combine the dal , turmeric and 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  2. Allow the steam to escape, before opening the lid.
  3. Transfer the dal in a deep non-stick pan, add the onions, tomatoes, drumstick, chopped curry leaves, salt and 1 cup of water, mix well and cover it with a lid and cook on a medium flame for 12 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  4. Add the prepared coarse mixture and 1 cup of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 7 minutes, while stirring occasionally. Keep aside.
  5. Heat the oil in a small non-stick pan, add the mustard seeds and sauté on medium flame for few seconds.
  6. Add the kashmiri red chilli and curry leaves and sauté on a medium flame for few seconds.
  7. Pour the tempering over the prepared dal, mix well and serve hot.

Drumstick Dal.. little spicy and flavourful dal.. which goes well with steam rice.. it just satisfy your palates.. I just loved this dal..
