What is lasagne sheets?

Lasagne are square or rectangular sheets of pasta, which are cooked, interlayered with other ingredients and baked. Lasagne is a great dish for warming the body on a cool evening. Lasagne dishes are tantalizing and tempting, so feed your senses with each and every mouthful.

Boil plenty of water in a large pan with 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of oil.
Add the lasagne to the boiling water by adding one sheet of pasta at a time. Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally and gently until the pasta is tender. Cooking times may vary with the size and the thickness of the pasta. Immediately drain the cooked pasta into a sieve or a colander. Transfer to a bowl of cold water to refresh it. Drain again and keep aside. If the lasagne sheets are not to be used immediately, add 1 tbsp of oil to it and toss it.

How to select lasagne sheets

Choose lasagne sheets - translucent, creamy yellow color without any tint of gray. When held up to the light it should appear translucent, without signs of any air bubbles or dark specs. The dark specs should only appear if it due to the type of flavoring agent used. Look at the thickness of different brands of pasta and if there is a difference, choose the thinner brand. Pasta that is too thick will become doughy when cooked.

When selecting fresh lasagne, look for the expiration date to be sure it will be fresh up until the time it will be used. Another factor to consider is the brand of pasta you prefer. The nutritional value of the pasta will also be shown on the label or package. It will show calories, fat and cholesterol content, and it will list the nutrients contained. The food label or package may also contain other information such as cooking instructions and estimated serving sizes.

" Double your favorite recipes, and freeze the extra servings for later use. This works especially well with sauces and baked pasta dishes like lasagne

How to store lasagne sheets

Store it, unopened, in a cool, dry cupboard for six to eight months or as per the expiry date. To freeze: Make the lasagne up to the end of step 5. Set aside to cool for 1 hour. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3-4 hours or until chilled. Once chilled, cut into serving portions. Wrap each portion individually in plastic wrap. Place in an airtight container or freezer bags, then seal, label, date and freeze. Keep it away from other foods as it easily absorbs odors of other food.

Health benefits of lasagne sheets

Lasagne sheets are made of maida and thus a good source of energy and carbs. It may contain some fibre, depending on the kind of flour used to make it. But it is not a very good source of other nutrients. For weight watchers we recommend to restrict its use.
