  1. Soak the masoor dal for 1 hour.
  2. Heat the oil and fry the onion and bay leaves for 2 minutes.
  3. Add the masoor dal and chopped vegetables other than tomatoes. Cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Add 6 teacups of water and cook covered on a slow flame for 20 to 30 minutes.
  5. Add the tomatoes and boil for a few seconds.
  6. Sprinkle salt and pepper and serve hot.
