Top 10 Khahkra Recipes

Few snacks are as popular as the khakhra. Having crossed geographical and cultural barriers, the khakhra has become so famous that it is easily available in supermarkets all across the country and in Indian stores in other parts of the world too. What makes the khakhra so popular is the fact that it is so handy. It is dry and easy to handle, but as satiating and tasty as a chapatti.

This famous Gujarati snack is nothing but flat rotis that are cooked till crisp, by pressing them on the tava using a muslin cloth or a khakhra press. Khakhras take a little time to prepare but it is worth every second spent, because it will be relished by everybody. You can make a batch of khakhras and store them in an airtight container for about a week. It is convenient to pack a few khakhras in your bag to munch on when you are hungry, whether you are travelling or working in office. When at home, just relax in the evening with a khakhra and a cup of hot tea or coffee.

It is possible to make different types of khakhras by incorporating the right ingredients into the dough. The dough itself may be made with wheat flour or a combination of flours, like the Oats Methi Multiflour Khakhra and the Nachni Sesame Khakhra. Methi is a popular flavor-enhancer as far as Nachni Khakhra are concerned, because it gives a pleasant bitterness, which is appetizing. Unleash your creativity and perk up your khakhra with the choicest seasonings like mint or pav bhaji masala. You can make your khakhras large or small, like the Mini Nachni and Bajra Khakhra. Mini khakhras are convenient for kids to handle. They can also be enhanced with toppings like chopped veggies or herbs and served as a starter!

The khakhra is as versatile as the roti and the sky is the limit when it comes to variety! You can try the interesting khakhras given in this mailer, and then use the ideas to create your own.

Spicy sesame and whole wheat khakhras. I usually make a large batch of these and store them in an air-tight container for those hungry times. They will stay well for several days. You can enjoy them with a hot cup of tea and a spicy pickle of your choice. Omit all the masalas to make plain (or "sada") khakhras . These khakhras can be cooked using ghee or dry roasted to make fat-free or low calorie khakras.

This Gujarati staple is traditionally made and served with a lot of ghee. Here is a healthier version made using just 1 teaspoon of oil. Mint and chillies add flavour to this popular snack. You can use innovative toppings for added taste. Carry them with you on your travels and you'll find it much easier to make new friends! For added flavour spread some Mint and Onion Chutney or Garlic Tomato Chutney on the khakhras and enjoy it as a tea time snack.
