Protein Rich Recipes recipes

Additional protein, i.e., at least 65 gm of protein per day is required during Pregnancy for the rapid growth of the foetus, for the enlargement of the uterus, mammary glands and placenta, formation of amniotic fluid and storage reserves for labour, delivery and lactation.

Besides this, protein is also required to build strong bones and teeth (which start growing at about eight weeks). So, ensure that you get enough protein throughout your pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, when your baby is growing more rapidly.

The major sources of protein are:

• Dairy products like milk, curds, paneer, cheese and buttermilk.

• Pulses and lentils like moath beans (matki), rajma (kidney beans), chana, etc. (Try sprouting them to increase the calcium and protein content, and ease digestion).

• Vegetables such as broccoli.

• Nuts and oilseeds like sesame seeds (til), almonds, cashew nuts, etc.

Try not to overload your diet with too many fried foods, as excess fat is a hindrance to protein absorption. We have included a range of protein-rich recipes like Kidney Bean Soup, Paneer and Tomato in Green Gravy, Walnut Sheera etc. in this section that will ensure your baby’s health and give you some interesting meal times too!
