When we think of Indian sweets or mithai the first thing that comes to our minds is barfi. Barfi is very popular all over India, and is made for varied occasions like pujas, festivals, parties, to celebrate an achievement, or simply because it is so tasty! Being so popular, barfis are readily available in most Indian sweet shops; however homemade barfis taste better and are also more economical. Plus, the fact that you have taken the effort to make it at home delights your loved ones and they will relish it even more!

There are innumerable varieties of barfis – made with dairy products, nuts and even fruit pulp! So, there is no dearth of choice, and you can make a different one each time. It takes a little practice to get the barfi perfectly right, so start by following our sure-shot recipes to the T, and once you get the hang of it, you can innovate with your own additional ingredients, slightly modified proportions etc.

Remember that all barfis take some time to set into solid form, so schedule it accordingly. You can make them a day in advance and store them in the fridge. As they use dairy products and sometimes fresh ingredients too, most barfis do not have a long shelf-life, so keep them in the fridge and consume within a day or two.

Nut-based Barfis

Anjeer-and-Mixed-Nut-BarfiAnjeer and Mixed Nut Barfi

Nuts feature commonly in Indian sweets. They usually give the mithai a nice and satiating mouth-feel, as well as a pleasant nutty flavour. Several barfis can be made with nuts as the main ingredient, along with a little sugar and if required a little ghee. Usually, since nuts like almond and cashew have some amount of oil content, these barfis will not require much ghee. And when ingredients like anjeer or dates are coupled with the nuts, the requirement of sugar also goes down.

Pista-Barfi
Pista Barfi

The Pista Barfi is a rich and delightful barfi with an attractive green colour, while the Anjeer and Mixed Nuts Barfi has a nice crunch that surprises you! When you cannot decide which nut to prefer, go for the Dry Fruit Barfi, which brings them all together to make a splendorous treat!

Whichever festival it is, be it Diwali, Raksha Bandhan or Navratri, be it a loved one’s birthday or a party, the spread would be incomplete without delicious barfis. With a bit of practice, you know which ingredients combine well together, how long to cook the barfi, and so on. So, start with the easy ones and surge ahead to become an expert in making this all-time favourite treat. Keep making various barfis in small quantities, not just on special occasions but even during weekends or to celebrate a small achievement in a tasty way.
