Kulitha raandai (horse gram curry) is a Konkani recipe of preparing the sprouted horse gram with potatoes and onions. Add a dash of crushed garlic and ground masala comprising of coconut, tamarind and red chillies and serve the spicy horse gram curry with rice or dosa.

500 gms sprouted kulith (horse gram)
250 gms chopped onions
250 gms potatoes, chopped into size of 1.5 Cms x 1.5 cms
4 to 5 cloves of garlic (lehsun), crushed
1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
salt to taste

Grind to paste:
5 to 6 whole dry kashmiri red chillies , fried lightly in a little oil
1/2 coconut
tamarind (imli) to taste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
salt to taste

2 to 3 tbsp oil
1 tbsp cumin seeds (jeera)


  1. Boil the sprouted horse gram in cooker with 1:3 water. take 5-6 whistles as horse gram takes long to cook.
  2. You can add a little bit of baking soda for it to cook faster.
  3. Take oil in a big kadhaai or cooker pan and heat.
  4. Add jeera and then put onions. once onions are little fried add potato pieces and fry for some time.
  5. Add the crushed garlic flakes.
  6. Add hing powder.
  7. Once the potatoes are a little cooked, add the ground masala and fry for some time.
  8. Add boiled horse gram and boil it till the horse gram and potatoes are well cooked adding salt as per taste.
