A product that is made from powdered or coarsely ground mustard that is combined with other ingredients, such as vinegar, turmeric, white wine, and sugar. The term "prepared" refers to the fact that the ground mustard is mixed with other ingredients. There are different types of prepared mustards available, such as Dijon and the standard mustard referred to as ballpark mustard. Prepared mustard is bright yellow to yellow-brown in color, with a sharp, peppery
flavor .

Prepared mustards are used as a condiment or seasoning and their flavors vary in sharpness, depending on the type of mustard seeds and other ingredients used to produce them. This is the mustard that is commonly bought in a yellow jar or squeeze bottle and used as a table condiment to add flavor to sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers. You can easily make prepared mustard at home. Grind mustard seeds in a blender, food processor or spice grinder, or buy preground mustard. Combine 1 c. ground mustard seeds with 6 tbsp. water and 6 tbsp. vinegar. Add 1 tsp. sugar or honey, 1/4 tsp. turmeric and salt to taste.

Yellow prepared mustard-Yellow mustard is the most common, with the mildest flavor. It is sometimes referred to as regular mustard or table mustard, and it is made from yellow or white mustard seeds.

Di jon prepared mustard-Dijon mustard is made from brown, or Oriental, mustard seeds and white wine.

Chinese style prepared mustard-Chinese mustard is very strong because the only other ingredient, besides ground mustard seed, is water.

Wholegrain mustard contains whole mustard seeds. Other types of prepared mustard are made with honey, brown sugar, chili peppers or whiskey.

How to select

Always check the expiry date and look out for any discoloration or gas formation ( bubbles) in the bottle, especially near the tip.

Culinary uses

" The pungency of mustard is always reduced by heating, not just at the time of preparation; if added to a dish during cooking much of the effect of the mustard is lost.
" Prepared Mustard sauces usually come as a thick paste, and are used either as a dipping sauce or in stir frying. Ideal for breaded and fried foods, barbecue, hamburgers, tacos, rice, etc.
" Prepared Mustard is often used at the table as a condiment on meat. It is also used as an ingredient in mayonnaise, vinaigrettes.
" Marinating the chicken with mustard sauce and then grilling on a barbeque is fantastic.
" Along with its use on various sandwiches, yellow mustard is a key ingredient in many potato salads, barbecue sauces, and salad dressings.

" Pour this sauce over steamed vegetables for a beautiful combination of colour and flavour.

How to store

Keep the bottles in a dark cool cupboard for 3 months before using if you can. After opening the seal, keep the mustard sauce in the fridge and add a teaspoon to your next dish for its delectable taste.
