Ingredients

For The Koftas
5 to 6 bread slices
1/3 cup curds (dahi)
3 tbsp plain flour (maida)
1 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
4 chopped green chillies
2 pinches baking soda
salt to taste
oil for deep-frying

For The Curry
250 gms chopped bottle gourd (doodhi / lauki)
2 large tomatoes
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
2 tsp chilli powder
1 tbsp coriander-cumin seeds (dhania-jeera) powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tsp garam masala
3/4 cup fresh curds (dahi)
1/3 cup boiled green peas
1/2 cup boiled and fried small potatoes
3 tbsp ghee
salt to taste

    For the koftas
  1. Remove the edges of the bread slices and soak them in the curds for 20 minutes.
  2. Add the plain flour, coriander, chillies, soda bi-carb and salt and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into small round koftas.
  4. Heat the oil in a kadhai and deep fry the koftas till they turn golden brown and crisp.
  5. Drain on an absorbent paper and keep aside.

For the curry

  1. Boil 1 1/2 cups of water in a deep pan, add the bottle gourd and cook till the pieces turn soft and are cooked.
  2. Blend using a hand blender into a smooth puree. Keep aside.
  3. Put the tomatoes in hot water for 10 minutes, cool and grate into a puree. Keep aside.
  4. Heat the ghee in a kadhai and add the cumin seeds.
  5. When the seeds crackle, add the chilli powder, coriander-cumin seed powder, turmeric powder and garam masala and saute for a few seconds.
  6. Add the curds, pumpkin puree, tomato puree and 1/2 cup of water, mix well and cook for a few minutes.
  7. Add the green peas, potatoes and salt, mix well and cook till the peas turn soft.

How to serve

  1. Just before serving, add the koftas to the curry and bring it to boil.
  2. Serve hot.
