  1. Wash and soak the parboiled rice and urad dal together in enough water in a deep bowl for at least 2 hours.
  2. Drain well, add the coconut milk and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl, add the carrot, onions, cabbage, cumin seeds, coconut and salt and mix well. Cover with a lid and keep aside to ferment in a warm place for 3 to 4 hours.
  4. Pour spoonfuls of the batter into the greased idli moulds and steam in a steamer for 10 to 12 minutes or till they are done.
  5. Serve hot with corn sambhar.

  2. This is the time when babies gradually get accustomed to eating the food the other members of the family eat. This is a slow process though. You need to give baby time to explore and get adapted. 
  3. Continue soups and porridge, while introducing soft foods like a variety of khichdi as well as fermented foods like idli as well. 
  4. Soft foods like Vegetable Idlis for Infants will initiate the chewing and thus process is a good exercise for baby’s gums. 
  5. Avoid or restrict the amount of salt you add to any kid of food cooked at this stage. 
  6. Avoid fried and and refined foods as they provide no nourishment to the baby.
  7. Try and establish a feeding routine now and try and feed tha baby at the same time each day. 

For the batter of Vegetable Idlis for Babies

  1. For the Vegetable Idli for Babies and Toddlers, combine the rice and urad dal in a deep bowl and wash it using clean water. 
  2. Drain the excess water using a strainer and discard it.
  3. Add more water for soaking. 
  4. Cover with a lid and keep aside for 2 hours to soak. 
  5. Again drain the water using a strainer. 
  6. Transfer the rice and urad dal into a mixer jar. 
  7. Add coconut milk to it. This will help in blending and making the mixture smooth. 
  8. Blend in a mixer till really smooth. No grain of rice or urad dal should remain behind. 
  9. Transfer this blended mixture of Vegetable Idlis for Babies and Toddlers into a deep bowl. 
  10. Add grated carrots to it. These add a dose of vitamin A which have a helping hand in vision. 
  11. Add finely chopped onions. If your baby doesn’t like the strong and pungent flavour of onions, you can avoid it. 
  12. Add grated cabbage. This is a good source of fiber. 
  13. Add cumin seeds for added flavour. Some babies done like the mouthfeel of spices like cumin and mustard. In that situation, you can coarsely powder and add it to the batter. 
  14. Add salt to make Vegetable Idli for Breakfast for Kids. You can avoid the salt completely as well. Alternatively add restricted amount of salt. Remember that habit formed during these early years, stay with babies through their life. 
  15. Mix well using a ladle. 
  16. Cover with a lid and keep aside to ferment in a warm place for 3 to 4 hours.

How to make Vegetable Idlis for Babies

  1. To make Vegetable Idli for Babies, heat enough water in a clean steamer or pressure cooker.
  2. Meanwhile, grease the idli moulds with oil so, that the idlis do no stick to the bottom.
  3. Pour a little batter into each greased idli mould.
  4. Steam in a steamer for 10 to 12 minutes or till the idlis are cooked. Make sure you steam the idlis on medium flame or else they will turn hard.
  5. To check whether they have cooked properly or no, insert a toothpick, knife or fork in the centre of the idli, if it comes out clean, your instant rava idlis are cooked.
  6. Cool slightly and remove the Vegetable Idli for Babies and Toddlers from the mould. If you are facing difficulty in removing the idli then dip a knife in little oil and loosen the edges using a knife or remove them with the help of a wet spoon.
