This tawa naan recipe is a butter naan without tandoor and done as a restaurant style naan at home. Naan is the most well-known Indian bread and is popular the world over. The naan is leavened bread prepared in the traditional tandoor but here we give you an easier method to make tawa naan recipe.

Most Indian’s don’t have tandoors in thier kitchens, but all do have a tawa. So this is the most popular way to make tawa naan recipe at home.

You can give a variation to naan by adding ingredients like coriander, mint, paneer, garlic, etc. Naan itself has a lot many variants, butter naan, garlic naan, cheese garlic naan, you can give it whatever flavor that you wish to.

Making tawa naan at home is not at all complex. We have made restaurant style naan by ingredients that are easily available in every house pantry. Naan is prepared and relished in many ways yet the basic and authentic recipe remains the same. Traditionally, naan is made using refined flour, yet you can substitute it with whole wheat flour. We have made our tawa butter naan using refined flour and have used yeast. Yet some people use curd and baking soda for the fermentation of the flour.

Be very careful while kneading the tawa naan dough as if the dough would have not been kneaded well, the naan will come out chewy.

Naan is traditionally cooked in an earthen pot which is known as tandoor and has a smoky flavor. We have made restaurant style naan at home which tastes great and goes well with Punjabi sabzis. The seasoning of nigella seeds on top gives it a unique taste.

Serve them hot with any Subzis or Dals of your choice.

  4. Mix well.
  5. Cover with a lid and keep aside for 5 minutes or till the dry yeast completely dissolves in the water. Covering prevents the dough from drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Q. My yeast did not froth. What could be the reason? 1. The yeast could have been old. yeast looses its leavning tendency over a period of time. It is important to use the yeast as early as possible. 2. The water was too hot. Yeast requires lukewarm water to activate, hot water kills the yeast. 3. Salt was mixed after the yeast was added to the dough. Salt kills the yeast and stops the process of leavning.
  2. Q. What can i use instead of yeast? You can use curds, baking soda and baking powder to acheive the same result. Visit our recipe for Naan without yeast on tava.
  3. Q. Can i make the Butter naan using whole wheat flour? Yes, you can. But traditonally Butter naan is made with all purpose flour or maida.
  4. Q. Can i use oil instead of ghee in the recipe to make Butter naan? Yes, you can. However it's better to use ghee to get a rich flavour.
  5. Q. My butter naan dough did not rise, what do i do? Make sure the yeast is bloomed before you add it to the dry ingredients. Also, when the yeast is added it should not come in direct contact with salt. Salt will kill the yeast and stop the fermentation process. Keep the butter naan dough in a warm spot after kneading and not under direct heat.
