A nice easy and tasty rasam recipe.Tasty Rasam is basically a thin lentil soup with lots of tomatoes and spices. The rasam can be served with rice or enjoyed simply as a soup.

2 tomatoes
4 green chillies
4 whole dry kashmiri red chillies
a pinch of jaggery (gur)
salt as required
a pinch of turmeric powder (haldi)
tamarind (imli) water extracted from a small lemon sized tamrind ball
a pinch asafoetida (hing)
curry leaves (kadi patta)
coriander (dhania) leaves
1/2 cup cooked toovar (arhar) dal , diluted with water
1/2 tsp coarsely powdered pepper and cumin seeds (jeera)
ghee , mustard seeds ( rai / sarson) for tempering

  1. Cook dhal and keep it diluted with water.
  2. Add tomatoes, green chillies, red chillies, jaggery, curry leaves, turmeric powder,hing, salt in the tamarind water.
  3. Bring it to boil till the raw smell of the tamarind goes.
  4. Then add dhal water.
  5. Bring it to boil.
  6. Add coarsely powdered pepper and jeera.
  7. Temper mustard seeds in ghee and pour it over the rasam.
  8. Garnish with corriander leaves.
  9. It goes well with rice or it can be served hot as soup.
