Narali Bhat recipe - How to make Narali Bhat

Preparation Time:    Cooking Time:    Total Time:     Makes 6 servings

1 cup rice (chawal)
1/4 cup grated coconut
1 cup sugar
3 to 4 cloves (laung / lavang)
6 tbsp ghee
a few saffron (kesar) strands , soaked in water
1 tsp cardamom (elaichi) powder
1/2 tbsp lemon juice
salt to taste
  1. Clean, wash and soak the rice in enough water.
  2. Drain and keep aside.
  3. Heat the ghee in a pan, add cloves and rice and saute for 3 minutes.
  4. Add 1 cup of warm water, mix well and cook till the rice is half cooked.
  5. Add the coconut and mix gently, without breaking the rice.
  6. Add the sugar, mix well and cook on a slow flame for 5 minutes.
  7. Add the cardamom powder, salt and lime juice and mix well and cook for 5 minutes.
  8. Add the saffron, mix well and cover and cook till the rice is completely cooked.
  9. Serve hot garnished with almonds.
