  1. Combine the pepper, cumin seeds, toovar daal and garlic and soak in water for 15 minutes.
  2. Blend in a mixer into a smooth paste. Keep aside.
  3. Combine the tamarind water, tomatoes, ground paste with asafoetida in a deep pan and bring to boil.
  4. Add the curry leaves and coriander, mix well and simmer for 15 minutes.
  5. Heat the ghee in a small pan and add mustard seeds.
  6. When the seeds crackle, pour this tempering to the dal and mix well.
  7. Serve hot.
