1/2 cup (125 grams) rice (chawal)
1/2 cup (125 grams) toovar (arhar) dal
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1/2 tsp salt
1 to 2 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
chopped onions
2 cups water

  1. Mix rice and toor dal and wash with water and keep it aside.
  2. In a cooking vessel heat oil and when oil is ready put mustard and cumin seeds in oil and wait till it pops.
  3. Fry chopped onions until it is like pink.
  4. Add rice and dal mixture to the onions and add salt and turmeric powder.
  5. Add two cups of water to rice and dal mixture and steam it in a cooker for about 30 minutes.
  6. Khichadi will be ready in 30 minutes.
