Khatti Dal recipe - How to make Khatti Dal

2 cups toovar (arhar) dal
2 raw mangoes , peeled and cut into small pieces
2 tbsp ghee
2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
2 gms asafoetida (hing)
2 gms turmeric powder (haldi)
5 gms salt
4 whole dry kashmiri red chillies
  1. Boil the dal with some salt and turmeric and when it is semi-cooked, add the raw mango pieces, keeping a few pieces aside for garnishing.
  2. When the dal is cooked completely, remove from the flame and keep aside.
  3. Heat ghee in a pan and add the cumin seeds.
  4. When the seeds crackle, add the red chillies and salt and sauté till the chillies are crisp.
  5. Pour the hot dal over the tempering and cover.
  6. Simmer for some time and serve hot.
