Green'n dhal presents a healthy combination of protein rich dals or lentils with fiber rich greens in a single dish. The choice of spice powders and ingredients makes the green dhal a must try with steamed rice or dosa.

2 bunches of spinach (palak)
1/2 cup toovar (arhar) dal
1/4 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram) ( dhals to be pressure cooked )
2 small sized onions
2 pods of garlic (lehsun) (optional)

for frying & grinding to paste
2 tbsp chana dal (split Bengal gram)
1 tbsp urad dal (split black lentils)
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1/2 tsp peppercorns
4 to 5 red chillies
1 tsp coconut

for seasoning
1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
few curry leaves (kadi patta)
2 red chillies

  1. Wash the greens carefully and remove mud if any
  2. Cut them finely and keep aside.
  3. Dice the onion.
  4. Pressure cook both tur dhal and moong dhal until 2 whistles.
  5. In a pan add little oil and season with the ingredients given.
  6. Add onion and saute for few seconds .
  7. Add garlic and fry for few seconds.
  8. Add cut greens and fry till they become soft.
  9. Now add the cooked dhal and mix.
  10. Mix in the ground paste and if necessary add some water to the desired consistency and remove when done.
