Tuar Daal- 1 cup
Split Green Moong Daal- 2 teaspoon
Masoor Daal- 2 teaspoon
salt to taste
Red chilli powder- 1/4 teaspoon
Coriander powder- 1/4 teaspoon
Masala to be roasted and ground in a coarse mixture:
Cumin seeds- 1/2 teaspoon
1 clove (laung / lavang)
Black Peppercorns- 4-5
Cardamon- 1
Shahjeera- 1/4 teaspoon
For the tempering:
Oil: 3 teaspoon
Whole red chillies: 2
Cumin Seeds: 1/2 teaspoon
Bayleaves- 1
Pureed tomatoes- 2
Chopped Onions- 2
Chopped Green chillies- 2
Ginger-garlic paste- 1 teaspoon
3 pods of crushed garlic
Chopped coriander leaves- 4 teaspoon
Butter- 2 teaspoon


  1. Method:
  2. 1. pressure cook all the dals with salt, red chilli powder, coriander powder and 3 cups of water till tender.
  3. 2. heat oil in a deep pan
  4. 3. add whole red chillies, cumin seeds, and bayleaves and saute for a minute.
  5. 4. add chopped onions and green chillies, and crushed garlic and saute till onions turn golden.
  6. 5. add the tomato puree and cook till oil separates.
  7. 6. add the roasted and ground masala and saute for 2-3 minutes
  8. 7. add the cooked daal and bring to one boil.
  9. 8. garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and butter.
  10. Note: tastes best with jeera rice and boondi raita.
