Description: It is a tropical plant whose fragrant and sweet fruit resembles a pine cone with green leaves on top. Pineapples have a rough skin with scales on it and a juicy yellow flesh with a thick core running across the fruit. Peeled pineapple slices with their core removed are preserved in syrup and canned. These are widely used in desserts, cakes etc. Pineapple juice is the juice extracted from pineapples and is available fresh, canned and in tetra packs.
How to select: Look for pineapples that are heavy for their size. While larger pineapples will have a greater proportion of edible flesh, there is usually no difference in quality between a small and large size pineapple. Pineapples should be free of soft spots, bruises and darkened "eyes," all of which may indicate that the pineapple is past its prime.
Use: Pineapple is used in several desserts, sweets, savouries, cocktails, mocktails etc.
How to store: Pineapple can be left at room temperature for one or two days before serving.Pineapple that has been cut up should be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It will stay fresher and retain more taste and juice.
Health benefits: Pineapple is an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese. It is also a good source of vitamin B1, vitamin B6, copper and dietary fiber.
