Description: A popular herb of Europe, marjoram has a strong aromatic scent but a fairly delicate flavour which complements salads, pastas as well as some vegetables. Wild marjoram is also called "Oregano". It is available in both fresh and dried forms. Dried marjoram is much stronger in flavour and should be used sparingly. It is used widely in Italian cooking.
How to select: Look for bright bunches without blemishes.
Use: Next time you enjoy a slice of pizza, garnish it with some fresh oregano. Oregano goes great with healthy sautéed mushrooms and onions. Adding a few sprigs of fresh oregano to a container of olive oil will infuse the oil with the essence of the herb. Fresh oregano makes an aromatic addition to omelettes and frittatas. Sprinkle some chopped oregano onto homemade garlic bread. Add oregano to salad dressings.
How to store: Refrigerate fresh oregano in a plastic bag up to 3 days. Store dried oregano in a cool, dark place up to 6 months.
Health benefits: Oregano is a very good source of iron, manganese and dietary fiber. In addition, oregano is a good source of calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids.
