Ingredients


1 cup masoor (whole red lentil)
7 to 8 small baby onions
1 cup sliced onions
3/4 cup chopped tomatoes
2 tsp oil
salt to taste

To be ground into a paste
8 cloves of garlic (lehsun)
8 whole dry red chillies
2 tsp coriander (dhania) seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
35 mm. (1 1/2") piece ginger (adrak)

For the garnish
2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)

Method
  1. Wash the masoor, add 2½ cups of water and the whole onions and cook in a pressure cooker till soft.
  2. Heat the oil in a large non-stick pan and fry the onions till they turn translucent.
  3. Add the ground paste and fry for 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Add the cooked masoor, 1 cup of water and salt and simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Add the tomatoes and simmer for another 10 minutes.
  6. Serve hot garnished with coriander.
