Low Cholesterol Recipes
What is Cholesterol?
|
Cholesterol is a thick fatty substance present in our blood. It is needed by our body to manufacture hormones, repair cell membranes, form a protective sheath around nerves and to make vitamin D. |
| |
Where Does Cholesterol Come From? Cholesterol is formed in two ways :
-
Our body makes its own supply, the liver produces all the cholesterol our body needs.
- The foods that we eat also contribute to our blood cholesterol levels. Animal foods like meats, full fat dairy products and egg yolks are high in cholesterol, while plant foods like vegetables, fruits and grains do not contain any cholesterol. Certain foods like ghee, butter, coconut and cream are high in saturated fats, which when consumed in excess can get converted into cholesterol, raising our blood cholesterol levels.
Like oil and water, cholesterol and blood do not mix. Cholesterol circulates in the blood through carriers called lipoproteins, which are of two types : LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein).
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as the bad cholesterol, delivers cholesterol to the body cells where it gets deposited and causes blockage of arteries.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL), or the good cholesterol, carries excess cholesterol in the blood back to the liver for recycling, thus avoiding its deposition in the arteries.
Our aim should therefore be to reduce the LDL cholesterol and increase the HDL cholesterol in our body. Every 1 mg/dl increase in HDL reduces the risk of heart attack by 2%.
