Ingredients

For the beans
1/3 cup rangoon vaal (lilva beans/double beans)
1/3 cup red rajma (kidney beans)
1 kg tomatoes
1 onion, chopped
2 slit green chillies
1 tsp chilli powder
2 to 3 tsp sugar
1 tbsp ghee
salt to taste

For the potato balls
4 potatoes, boiled and mashed
2 fresh bread slices
1 tbsp chopped cashewnuts (kaju) or peanuts
3 to 4 green chillies, chopped
1 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
1 tsp lemon juice
oil for deep-frying
salt to taste

Method

    For the beans

    1. Soak the beans separately overnight.
    2. Next day, cook each variety of beans separately in a pressure cooker. Drain.
    3. Cut the tomatoes into big pieces, add 1/2 teacup of water and cook. When cooked, take out a puree by passing through a sieve.
    4. Heat the ghee and fry the onion for 1 minute.
    5. Add the tomato puree, green chillies, chilli powder, sugar, salt and the cooked beans.
    6. Boil for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

    For the potato balls

    1. Dip the bread slices in water for 1 minute. Squeeze out the water and crumble the bread.
    2. Mix the crumbled bread with the remaining ingredients.
    3. Shape into small balls and deep fry in hot oil.

    How to serve

    1. Just before serving, add the potato balls to the beans.
    2. Serve hot.
