A tasty, slightly-spicy side-dish made with whole toovar. This goes well with any type of roti or paratha.

Ingredients


To Be Ground Into A Paste
8 cloves garlic
8 whole dry red chillies
2 tsp coriander (dhania) seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
35 mm (1 1/2") piece ginger

Other Ingredients
1 cup toovar (arhar) , soaked overnight
7 to 8 small whole onions
4 tbsp ghee
1 cup sliced onions
salt to taste
3/4 cup chopped tomatoes

For The Garnish
2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)

Method
  1. Clean ,wash and soak the toovar, in enough water overnight, add 2 1\2 cups of water and the whole onions and pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles or till the toovar is cooked.
  2. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid. Keep aside.
  3. Heat the ghee in a kadhai; add the sliced onions and sauté for 2 to 3 minute, while stirring continuously.
  4. Add the ground paste and sauté for another 3 to 4 minutes. , while stirring continuously.
  5. Add the cooked toovar, 1 cup of water and salt, mix well and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring once in between.
  6. Add the tomatoes and cook for another 10 minutes. Serve hot garnished with coriander.
