Effect of High Blood Cholesterol Levels

While some cholesterol is needed for good health, too much cholesterol in the blood can make us more susceptible to a heart attack. What happens is that the extra cholesterol in our blood gets deposited in our arteries, causing them to narrow, thus decreasing the blood flow to the heart. Continuous deposition of cholesterol can totally block an artery, completely restricting blood supply to the heart, resulting in a heart attack. We should all be aware of the healthy and high-risk blood cholesterol levels.

Refer to the following table to discover whether your blood cholesterol level is desirable or is predisposing you to the risk of heart diseases. And remember to check your cholesterol levels regularly and adjust your diet and lifestyle accordingly.

Know Your Blood Cholesterol Levels

Type Desirable Level Borderline Risk High Risk
Total blood cholesterol Less than 200 mg/dl 201 to 239 mg/dl More than 240 mg/dl
LDL cholesterol Less than 130 mg/dl 131 to 160 mg/dl More than 160 mg/dl
HDL cholesterol More than 50 mg/dl 50-35 mg/dl Less than 35 mg/dl

What Do These Levels Indicate?

Desirable Level : This is the level of cholesterol required for the maintenance of our body cells. There is no risk of heart disease if blood cholesterol levels are maintained at this level.

Borderline Risk : This level is slightly above normal. We need to be cautious as at this stage we are at slight risk of heart attack. A healthy diet and a good exercise regime will definitely help to lower blood cholesterol levels and avoid heart diseases.

High Risk : At this level we are at twice the risk of developing heart diseases as those in the borderline risk category. We need to start on a low cholesterol diet and engage in proper exercise under the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist. Cholesterol levels should be continuously monitored at regular intervals.
