Description: Dates are the fruit of the date palm. They are brown and fleshy, about 4 cm. (1 1/2") long and grow in clusters. Originating in the Persian Gulf, today dates are cultivated throughout North Africa and Arabia.
How to select: Dates or Khaleseh : The commonly available variety of dates which has an orange brown skin and is very fragrant. Black Dates or Halawi : A very sweet variety of dates with a dark brown skin.
Use: They are used for fritters, nougats and jam and are crystallized. In India, dates are used to make sweet chutneys, confectionery and cakes.
How to store: Store it in a cool dry place.
Health benefits: .Dates are rich in sugar and also contain calcium, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and vitamins B1 and B2.
