This dal is traditionally referred to as Makhni Dal, since it contains a lot of butter. Our version is equally creamy but derives this virtue from low fat yoghurt instead.

Ingredients

Method
  1. Mix the black gram dal and onions with 2 teacups of water and cook in a pressure cooker until soft. Mash slightly.
  2. Add the tomatoes, turmeric powder, paste, coriander-cumin seeds powder, chilli powder and salt. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes or until the dal thickens.
  3. Add the yoghurt and sprinkle coriander on top.
  4. Serve hot.
