DIABETES

Types of Diabetes

1.Type I Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM)
2.Type II Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM)
1.

Type I Diabetes Mellitus accounts for all diabetics who are insulin dependent and therefore this type is also referred to as Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM). This category includes juvenile diabetics, which means it occurs at a very young age. Those with type I diabetes mellitus are deficient in insulin and hence require external insulin injections to regulate their blood sugar levels life long.

2.

Type II Diabetes Mellitus accounts for a large percentage of diabetics and is most common among individuals above the age of 35 to 40 years. Individuals with type II diabetes mellitus have a diminished secretion of insulin and hence they require oral drugs that will stimulate the pancreas to produce and secrete insulin. They do not have to take external insulin as part of their treatment. This type of diabetes is referred as Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) or adult onset diabetes. It can be managed or its onset may be delayed by taking the necessary precautionary measures, like looking after your diet and monitoring weight by regular exercise while cutting down on sweet and fatty foods. However in some cases, when insulin production decreases, there may be a need for external insulin, under the guidance of your physician

3.

Other kinds of diabetes are Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, that occurs to mothers during their pregnancy and Secondary Diabetes Mellitus is a broad category which includes diabetes caused due to certain genetic disorders, medical diseases, drugs and malignancies.
