DIABETES

Hypoglycemia ( Low Blood Sugar Levels)

Hypoglycemia is by far the most common condition that diabetics face at some time or the other.

Diabetics who take insulin or oral hypoglycemic drugs are prone to low blood sugar levels after they have their medication and thus they must eat within a stipulated time period or their blood sugar may drop leading to a condition called HYPOGLYCEMIA.

Now you may wonder how you can detect hypoglycemia. The most common signs and symptoms of a hypoglycemic are as listed below

Severe headache early in the morning.
Increased sweating and palpitations.
Weakness and dizziness.
Weakness and dizziness.
Blurred vision and hunger pangs.
Mood swings with or without slurred speech.
Can experience drowsiness.
Nervousness with a confused state of mind.
Bed wetting during the night.

These symptoms of hypoglycemia may vary for different individuals and also the same individuals may experience different symptoms at different times. Thus, one has to be alert at all times.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, consult your doctor as self diagnosis or improper treatment for hypoglycemia can lead to unconsciousness or even convulsions in extreme situations. To combat hypoglycemia quickly and avoid any complications have 2 biscuits or a small piece of milk chocolate or 2 teaspoons of glucon D dissolved in a glass of water or any other sweetened beverage.

Why does hypoglycemia occur?

Overdose of medication; i.e. if you have too many pills or over dosage of insulin.
Delay in regular meal times or skipping one or more meals or a snack.
Overexertion. In other words, if you exercise more than normal, are stressed out or overworked. Any kind of exertion that one is not accustomed to on a daily basis.
Consumption of alcohol on an empty stomach or when you already have low blood sugar levels.

Hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar Levels)

This is a condition when the blood sugar levels are much higher than normal. Such uncontrolled diabetes can be fatal if it is not managed correctly or treated on time. It occurs only when the prescribed medication has not been taken or when the person is ill or undergoing severe stress. The unutilized blood sugar has the following effects on our body.

Increased urination and/or increased thirst
Dry mouth and dehydration
Pain in the calves
Loss of appetite
Weakness
Weight loss
Easy fatigability
Difficulty in breathing
Too high blood sugar levels may also lead to presence of ketones in the urine. In extreme cases your physician will recommend periodic blood and urine tests, to check on the sugar and ketone levels. A fruity odour in the breath is a very common sign of high ketone levels in the urine.

Why does hypoglycemia occur?

Undiagnosed diabetes.
Omission or reduction of external insulin or oral medicines.
Infections or acute illness such as flu, cold, diarrhoea etc.
Improper eating habits.
Change in medications.
