10 Ways to Stay Cholesterol-Conscious

A sensible person will definitely take steps to lower blood cholesterol levels by eliminating foods that are high in cholesterol.

  1. The biggest offenders are saturated fats like ghee, butter, cream and coconut stay away from them! A much better bet is to use oils and restrict its consumption to only 3 teaspoons a day.
  2. Use non-stick utensils for cooking and banish the words ’deep frying’ from your dictionary. Alternative methods of cooking such as boiling, baking, roasting or shallow frying can produce food that is as tasty and definitely more healthy.
  3. We are all aware of the high calorie count of junk food like pizzas and burgers, foods made from refined flour (maida) such as bread and biscuits and foods that are high in sugar like pastries, sweets, soft drinks and chocolates. Remember, these foods are also taboo for those wishing to control cholesterol levels.
  4. If you must eat out, try and stick to salads, fresh fruits, juices and stir-fries.
  5. Limit the intake of caffeinated beverages like tea, coffee and colas, processed juices, and alcoholic beverages, which are full of empty calories and add no nutrients to the body whatsoever.
  6. Avoid full fat milk and milk products, opting instead for low fat counterparts.
  7. Say no to mayonnaise and high fat dressings made from cream.
  8. Nuts and oilseeds like cashew nuts and coconut are high in saturated fats and should be avoided.
  9. High blood pressure combined with high blood cholesterol levels places you at a greater risk of developing heart diseases. If you suffer from high blood pressure, stay away from processed foods like breads, juices, pickles, papads, baked foods, sauces and other sodium-rich foods like seafood and spinach. Restrict the amount of salt in your food and strictly avoid the use of table salt.
  10. Uncontrolled diabetes can also lead to high blood cholesterol and heart diseases. Diabetics should avoid high carbohydrate foods like potatoes, yam, beetroot, banana and chickoo. A better option is citrus fruits like oranges and jamun.
