Factors Affecting Blood Cholesterol Levels

  • The greatest need for iron is during growth or periods of blood loss.
  • Family history: While diet plays an important role in raising or lowering our blood cholesterol levels, inherited tendenciesalso influence our cholesterol levels.

  • Age: The risk of high blood cholesterol levels or any other heart problems increases with age, peaking at middle age, at around 50 to 55 years.
  • Gender: Men are at greater risk of developing high blood cholesterol than women. However, in women, after menopause a decline in the hormone ’estrogen’ leads to a decrease in HDL levels and an increase in LDL levels, which is one of the root cause of heart diseases.
  • Unhealthy eating habits: Excessive consumption of fatty foods, sugar and refined foods and the lack of fibre in the diet are unhealthy eating habits that lead to obesity and raised blood cholesterol levels. Excessive intake of saturated fats (ghee, butter, cream) also raises blood cholesterol levels. Fibre helps to bind bad cholesterol (LDL) and evicts it from the body, so make sure to include fibre-rich foods in your daily diet as shown in the section on Functional Foods, page 12.
  • Alcohol intake, caffeinated beverages and smoking: Excessive intake of alcohol, caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee and smoking decrease HDL levels, thereby increasing the risk of heart diseases.
